On English Words Frequencies From Shakespeare To Modern Soap Operas

Word frequencies are used in many text mining and information retrieval applications. Nowadays, and thanks to the Internet, it is easy to find lists of word frequencies for various languages.

Wikitionary, the sister website of Wikipedia provides such lists for many languages. I have decided to extract two of these lists the Gutenberg list and the TV movies list.

The Gutenberg list was built from the Gutenberg project book collection. This is a collection of classic books that fell into the public domain. The list has been last updated in 2005. All books in the considered collection were published before 1923. The TV movies list was built from TV shows and movies scripts and transcripts.

An Immutable Complex Numbers Class In Scala Programming Language

I post in this blog entry about the implementation of an immutable complex numbers class in Scala programming language. I have tried in this implementation and as much as possible to use Scala's functional programming style. This post shows how concise and beautiful Scala code could be.

Minimeter Fix for Videotron

Minimeter is a handy Firefox extension that helps keeping an eye on one'Internet usage. I have already blogged about this extension here a while ago.

This extension stopped working for me this week and returned an error whenever it connected to Videotron to fetch my Internet usage statistics. For those looking for a quick fix, clearing Videotron cookies will very probably solve the problem until the next time it occurs.

This is a step by step fix not intended for the faint-hearted users.

Surviving Progress Movie - Quick Impressions

I went to watch documentary Surviving Progress last weekend. The fact that notorious names such as Pr. Stephen Hawking and Pr. David Suzuki were in this movie was a paramount incentive for me. To a lesser extent, the fact that the movie was a canadian production also sparked my curiousity.

The Unlimited and the Limit in Pythagoreans' Perception of the World

It is a fact that we owe much  to the ancient greek philosophers and mathematicians. Such mathematicians succeeded to turn all the trade-motivated calculation recipies gathered by sumerians and babylonians after them into a sound science that we call mathematics today. Some of the pioneers in this adventure were the Pythagoreans.

First Principles By Howard Burton

This book has got my attention a couple of weeks ago during one of my weekend bookstore roaming. On the book cover one could read that this was about the foundation of a theoretical physics institute in Waterloo, the Perimiter Institute. An institute that aims answering foundational questions about quantum physics while taking different sometimes divergent approaches in tackling this problem.

Problems Installing Qt Creator On Natty 11.04

This morining I needed to install Qt SDK on my Natty distribution. Some blog mentionned that it is better to install Qt Creator as it comes with all the tools and libraries required in a typical Qt Project.

I tried to install Qt Creator using Synaptic. Unfortunately, I have run to some package dependencies problems.
